Richard Gere Set to Fly With Hilary Swank in 'Amelia'
April 16, 2008 03:04:08It seems that landing one leading role after another is not a hard thing to do for veteran actor Richard Gere. After getting hired for Warner Bros. Pictures' crime drama "Brooklyn's Finest", the co-star of Julia Roberts in "Pretty Woman" has been tapped to star opposite Hilary Swank in Amelia Earhart's biopic project "Amelia".
In the film executively produced by Swank and scribbler Ron Bass, the 54-year-old actor will take the important role of publisher George Putnam who happens to be Amelia's husband. The Golden Globe award-recipient for his role in "Chicago" will bring Putnam to the big screen under the direction of "Vanity Fair" helmer Mira Nair and is going to join Swank when the lensing begins in late-April in Toronto, Nova Scotia and South Africa.

Bollywood movie star Shilpa Shetty was detained and questioned at Mumbai airport Wednesday September 26th over a kiss she received from Richard Gere five months ago.
Shetty was on her way to Berlin where she is set to star in the musical "Miss Bollywood" when immigration officials stopped her. "She called me in the middle of the night and was in tears," her publicist Dale Bhagwagar said Thursday September 27th.

A Golden Globe winning actor, Richard Gere is about to be honored for his advocacy work. The movie star, who first became famous during the 1980s, is about to be handed this year Marian Anderson Award, mainly to honor his advocacy efforts on behalf of independence for Tibet and better care for HIV/AIDS patients.
Naming some of Gere's advocacy efforts are serving as the chairman of the board of the International Campaign for Tibet and has sponsored the Dalai Lama on two trips to the United States. He, in addition, also started a foundation bearing his name and a public charity, Healing the Divide, that work to better medical care for HIV/AIDS patients.

In support of a charity project called Tibetan Health Initiative, Tom Waits and other artists' 2003 concert will be molded into a live album titled "Healing the Divide: A Concert for Peace and Reconciliation". This album, which will be released July 10 via Anti-, is aimed to increase awareness of Tibetans' declination.
"The release of this CD helps us raise awareness about the worsening condition of Tibetans both inside and out of the region," Healing the Divide co-founder Richard Gere said.
