"Skyfall" might see Ralph Fiennes being prepared to be the new M. Details over what character Fiennes wil tackle in the 23rd James Bond film have not been officially revealed, but words are running wild that Judi Dench's M will be forced to leave her post, and Fiennes' secret character is likely to fill in her vacant slot.
Earlier on Monday, January 2, Fiennes dropped a little hint about his character. "I'm allowed to say that I'm a government agent," he said. "I used to be a complete nerd about the books and the detail in them. They are fantastic. There was Fleming's obsession with different kinds of champagne and caviar. He kind of fetishes these things."
Shortly after that, an insider at EON Production revealed to MovieWeb that "Skyfall" will be Dench's final 007 appearance as M, and Fiennes is set to carry on the character into the unforeseeable future. The insider said, "Ralph Fiennes plays a government agent, which we never get a name on, because he is set to play the new M."
" 'Skyfall' centers around M (Dench) where her past forces her to leave as head of MI6, and find a new M. The board of MI6 then turns to a government agent (Fiennes) to take over," explained the source. "M is now forces to train the new head of MI6."
Fiennes was previously rumored to play Bond's old nemesis, Blofeld. Back in November 2011, he denied the swirling rumor as claiming, "I will not be stroking a white pussy!" He added that his role will be "really interesting part which is really quite fun."
To open wide in the U.S. theaters on November 9, 2012, "Skyfall" is directed by Sam Mendes. Daniel Craig will reprises his role as James Bond, while Javier Bardem is set to tackle the lead villain. They are joined by Naomie Harris, Albert Finney, Berenice Marlohe, Ola Rapace and Ben Whishaw.
