Hollywood's attention and within a short time, the funnyman subsequently found himself landing his first film role in "Popeye" (1980) followed by another in "The World According to Garp" (1982). Afterwards seen more on big screen feature for the next few years, it was not until he joined the cast of "Good Morning, Vietnam" (1987) that the actor ultimately could embrace widespread prominence he deserved of. Not only the movie scored huge success both critically and commercially, it also garnered him best leading actor nomination at the Golden Globe Awards and Academy Awards both in 1988 and at BAFTA Awards by 1989.
