Parmalee emerged as one of country music's most consistent hitmaking bands, a family-founded group from a small North Carolina town that carved a path to the top of the charts with a blend of rock-influenced country and heartfelt songwriting. The band, consisting of brothers Matt Thomas (lead vocals, guitar) and Scott Thomas (drums), their cousin Barry Knox (bass), and childhood friend Josh McSwain (guitar), formed in their hometown of Parmele, drawing its name from the community. Their musical foundation was built early, playing together in a makeshift studio on their family's property and developing a sound that reflected their diverse influences.
The band's professional journey began with the independent release of their album "Daylight" in 2002. They spent years honing their craft on the road, building a loyal fanbase through relentless touring. A pivotal and harrowing moment came in 2010 when the band was involved in an armed robbery after a show in South Carolina; Scott Thomas was critically wounded, requiring a lengthy recovery that tested the group's resolve. Their perseverance paid off when they signed with Stoney Creek Records, a division of BBR Music Group. Their major-label debut single, "Musta Had a Good Time," cracked the Top 40, but it was the follow-up, "Carolina," that became their breakthrough, reaching number one on the Billboard Country Airplay chart in 2013 and serving as the title track for their debut album, Feels Like Carolina, which was released in 2014.
Parmalee solidified their status as hitmakers with a string of number-one singles on the Country Airplay chart. They achieved a major crossover success with "Just the Way," a collaboration with Blanco Brown that topped the chart in 2021 and blended country with a hip-hop beat. This was followed by the romantic anthem "Take My Name," which also reached number one. Their album For You arrived in 2021, showcasing their evolving sound. The hits continued with "Gonna Love You" and "Girl in Mine," the latter of which became their fifth chart-topper in 2023. That same year, they released the project Greatest Hits Volume 1, a testament to their decade of radio dominance, and followed it with a new single, "Backroad Girl."
The band continues to be a staple on country radio and a popular live act, maintaining their core lineup and their connection to their North Carolina roots. Their journey from playing in a rural shed to achieving multiple number-one singles stands as a testament to their resilience, family bond, and enduring appeal in the modern country landscape.
