Estevez's acting journey began at a young age, making his film debut in an uncredited role in Badlands (1973), though it wasn't until the early 1980s that he began to gain recognition for his talent.

Estevez's early career included a notable supporting role in the coming-of-age film Tex (1982), which helped pave the way for his breakout performance in The Outsiders (1983). This role not only showcased his acting abilities but also established him as a member of the "Brat Pack," a group of young actors who became synonymous with a series of successful teen films in the 1980s. Estevez solidified his status in the industry through starring roles in the iconic films The Breakfast Club (1985) and St. Elmo's Fire (1985), both of which have since become cultural touchstones.

He became widely recognized for his role as Gordon Bombay in the beloved film series The Mighty Ducks (1992–1996), which endeared him to a generation of young viewers and laid the foundation for his later work.

In addition to his acting prowess, Estevez made his directorial debut with the film Wisdom (1986), in which he also starred. He continued to explore his directorial capabilities with projects like Men at Work (1990) and The War at Home (1996).
