When a brutal cold front descends upon Cincinnati, the city's public library transforms from a quiet refuge into a tense battleground for survival. Directed by and starring Emilio Estevez as Stuart, a compassionate librarian, the film follows a group of homeless patrons who, facing life-threatening temperatures, peacefully refuse to leave the building at closing time. Their act of civil disobedience pits them against a by-the-book library administrator played by Christian Slater and a ambitious district attorney, portrayed by Alec Baldwin, who views the sit-in as a criminal act. As the standoff escalates and draws media attention, allies emerge including a resourceful reporter (Taylor Schilling) and a sympathetic crisis negotiator (Jeffrey Wright), forcing everyone to confront their prejudices about community, dignity, and who truly owns public space. This gripping social drama weaves together the stories of a diverse ensemble, including Jena Malone as a dedicated library employee and Michael K. Williams as one of the organizers, building a powerful narrative about compassion clashing with protocol on the front lines of a modern American crisis.
