Veteran Italian actress Sophia Loren finally ends her big-screen hiatus. Italian newspapers report that the Oscar winner lands her first starring role in nearly a decade in "The Human Voice", a movie version of French writer Jean Cocteau's one-person play. Her son Edoardo Ponti will be the helmer for the project.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, 40-year-old Ponti will direct his mother, who has won five special Golden Globes and a BAFTA Award, in the Italian language. The production will take place in Rome, Naples and Ostia, with shooting expected to begin this month and take around three weeks.

Loren's last starring role was as Maria in "Too Much Romance ... It's Time for Stuffed Peppers", the 2004 comedy from director Lina Wertmuller. Meanwhile, her most recent appearance on big screens was as Daniel Day-Lewis' on-screen mom in the 2009 musical romance "Nine", which also starred Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard and Penelope Cruz among others.

It is not the first time Ponti and Loren team up in a film. The 78-year-old icon, who was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at last year's Taormina Film Festival, previously starred in his 2002 directorial debut "Between Strangers".
