AceShowbiz - On August 15, the iconic country band Alabama will be celebrated in a two-hour television special on CMT. With performances from some of the biggest names in country music and touching tributes from celebrities, this event promises to be an unforgettable homage to Alabama's enduring legacy.
CMT Giants, a series launched in 2006 to honor the creme de la creme of country music, will return this year to spotlight Alabama. The band, composed of cousins Randy Owen, Teddy Gentry and the late Jeff Cook, gained immense popularity in the '80s with hits like "Tennessee River", "Love in the First Degree" and "Dixieland Delight". Over their 50-year career, they've sold over 75 million records and produced 41 hit singles topping the Billboard charts.
Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean, Little Big Town and Luke Bryan are among the nearly dozen artists set to perform live renditions of Alabama's timeless classics during this landmark event taped at Belmont University's Fisher Center for the Performing Arts in Nashville. For example, Blake Shelton teams up with Steve Wariner and Kara Britz to cover the emotional ballad "Old Flame".
Other standout performances include Riley Green's rendition of "Dixieland Delight", Sam Hunt's take on "Song of the South" and Brad Paisley with "Old Alabama". Fans can also look forward to Little Big Town's performance of "The Closer You Get" and Jamey Johnson's heartfelt version of "Angels Among Us".
In addition to the musical performances, the special will feature personal stories and tributes from notable figures such as Evander Holyfield, Lionel Richie, Martina McBride and Vince Gill. These celebrities will reflect on Alabama's significant impact on music. Martina McBride, Luke Bryan and more will provide both in-person and virtual appearances, sharing rare footage, interviews and anecdotes that underscore the band's lasting influence.
Alabama themselves will take center stage, reminiscing on their storied journey that saw them broaden country music's audience and open doors for countless self-contained bands. Despite health challenges and the recent passing of Jeff Cook in 2022, the group continues to tour, demonstrating their passion and resilience.
"CMT Giants: Alabama" is executive produced by CMT's Margaret Comeaux and Taillight's Tom Forrest. The event promises not just a celebration of incredible music but also a touching tribute to Alabama's legacy, marked by rare photos and exclusive interviews. As Randy Owen shared, the news of his good health has encouraged the band to keep performing, further fueling the excitement among fans.
Don't miss this extraordinary tribute, airing on CMT at 8 P.M. ET / 7 P.M. CT on August 15.
