AceShowbiz - In a candid interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Pharrell Williams, the 51-year-old music producer and current Men's Creative Director at Louis Vuitton, expressed his frustration with celebrities who flaunt their political beliefs. "I don't do politics. In fact, I get annoyed sometimes when I see celebrities trying to tell you [who to vote for]," Williams said, stressing that he prefers staying out of the political spotlight.
Although he did not specify which celebrities he considers credible, Williams mentioned, "There are celebrities that I respect that have an opinion, but not all of them. I'm one of them people [who says], 'What the heck? Shut up. Nobody asked you,' " he noted.
Williams' remarks came in the wake of colossal headlines stirred by pop star Taylor Swift's endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, for the 2024 Presidential Election. Swift's endorsement ignited a social media storm, with other celebrities like Olivia Rodrigo, George Clooney and Jamie Lee Curtis also backing Harris. Meanwhile, Elon Musk and Kid Rock are among notable figures supporting Donald Trump's campaign for a second term.
While Williams stays steadfast in keeping his political leanings private, his humanitarian values shine through. Describing himself as a "federal employee," Williams said, "I believe in merited civil service. I'm more of a humanitarian. I like people trying to help people. Not sure I'll ever vote far right. I won't do that." Nevertheless, he clearly stated, "I don't do politics."
Commenting further on celebrities' political activism, Williams did not hold back. "When people get out there and get self-righteous and they roll up their sleeves and s**t, and they are out there walking around with a placard: 'Shut up!' So, no, I would rather stay out of the way, and obviously, I'm going to vote how I'm going to vote. I care about my people and I care about the country, but I feel there's a lot of work that needs to be done, and I'm really about the action."
Williams uses his platform to address his opinions on broader issues without endorsing politicians or political parties. He also remains firm on his music's use in political campaigns, reflecting a broader sentiment among many artists. Recently, The White Stripes, along with other notable musicians like Mick Jagger and Sheryl Crow, filed lawsuits against Donald Trump's campaign for unauthorized use of their music, highlighting the complex relationship between artistry and politics.
As the 2024 elections draw closer, the debate on celebrity political endorsements is likely to intensify. Pharrell Williams' stance adds a critical perspective, urging celebrities to be mindful of their influential platforms responsibly.
