AceShowbiz - The 2017 American Music Awards has officially started. Jamie Foxx kicked off the event hosted by Tracee Ellis Ross by delivering a moving message. "This year more than perhaps any other in recent history, we needed the power of music to help us escape the news of the day," he said.
"We needed the power of music to help us heal, from hurricanes, wildfires, hate, hatred filled violence. 2017 was a year that tested our faith -- in these moments of crisis, heroes emerged," he continued. "For even as we mourn those who are lost, we know this together our strength will pull us through, together we shall overcome the pain, together we can unite as a people and a nation."
Chadwick Boseman later took the stage to announce the first AMA winner that night. The "Black Panther" actor presented the Favorite Duo or Group - Pop/Rock Award to Imagine Dragons. The winning group talked about "powerful women" in America as well as LGBT during their acceptance speech.
Soon, Demi Lovato graced the stage to perform a rendition of "Sorry Not Sorry" before Nick Jonas followed in with his performance of "Find You". The Disney alum was joined by a group of sexy dancers during his performance.
DJ Khaled was announced as the winner Favorite Song - Rap/Hip-Hop category for his collaborative track with Justin Bieber, "I'm the One". The DJ defeated other candidates like Kendrick Lamar and Gucci Mane.
Justin Hartley and Kathryn Hahn then presented Favorite Male Artist - Country Award to Keith Urban. The former "American Idol" judge also won Favorite Album - Country Award for his "Ripcord" as well as Favorite Song - Country Award for "Blue Ain't Your Color".
Afterwards, Shawn Mendes belted out "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back" before "Riverdale" stars Camila Mendes, KJ Apa, Lili Reinhart and Madelaine Petsch presented Favorite Artist - Electronic Dance Music Award to The Chainsmokers.
Shawn was later back on the stage to accept Favorite Artist - Adult Contemporary Award. The Canadian heartthrob thanked his manager and his fans during his acceptance speech. "You guys make me really really cool. Thank you so much. I love you guys," he said, gaining a loud cheer from his female fans.
More winners will be announced as the show unfolds.
