The New Normal Episode 1.05 Nanagasm

While Shania works on crossing things off of her California bucket list, the guys prep for a dinner with David's mother. Bryan is less than thrilled as the two clearly don't get along, but David insists that she is really an amazing woman. David invites Goldie to join them for dinner, where they plan to make the announcement about their pregnancy.

Meanwhile, while nursing her Chardonnay at the hotel bar, Jane is approached by a flirtatious (though portly) young man in his 30s who makes his intentions very clear. While at first confused by his advances, she decides to act a bit out of character and indulge herself by taking up his invitation to go back to his hotel room.

David's mom is completely thrilled at the news of her grandbaby on the way, especially when she learns that the biological father is David. She enthusiastically welcomes Goldie to the family, ignoring the fact that Bryan is a part of the family at all. Bryan is left understandably irked.

Jane has no choice but to seek David's gynecological advice with a curious medical issue. When Jane describes what happened to her the previous night, David explains that what she experienced was probably an orgasm. As a woman married to a closeted gay man all those years, it's very possible that this was Jane's first. David encourages Jane to explore her sexuality, regardless of what societal norms indicate for a woman her age. It's never too late to start her life!

When Bryan and David's mom have a late night run-in in the kitchen, they finally decide to have an open discussion about their differences for the sake of David and this baby. Bryan insists that David's mom clings on to David desperately, because ever since she left her husband he's been the only stable man in her life. David's mom, offended, turns the tables on Bryan and says that maybe he has some mommy issues of his own. She knows he hasn't talked to his mother since his father died; maybe it's time to confront his problems head-on.

Jane decides to take David's advice to heart and opts for a second go-around with her suitor from the night before. But when she tries to turn their casual hookup into a date, he surprises her by just saying she should accept this for what it is, leaving her high and dry. Jane's crushed, realizing she's been used.

Though their talk didn't end so well, the next day David's mom extends an olive branch by giving "her son" the best part of the salmon at dinner. But she surprises both guys when she hands it over to Bryan, finally welcoming him to her family. Maybe they can get along after all! Later, Bryan takes her advice as well and decides to reach out to his mother for the first time since his father died.

Jane decides to not let this romantic setback get her down. She interrupts her two-night-stand as he puts the moves on a different woman at the bar, making a comment about his one-year-old son and blowing his chances. Then, she struts off with an even younger and more attractive man, letting him know what he missed out on!
