Goldie's life is anything but perfect; she's a Midwestern waitress and single mother looking to escape her dead-end life and small-minded grandmother, Jane. Not only that, her dead-beat husband is hardly doing his part, leaving her to raise her quirky nine-year-old daughter, Shania, the best she can.

When Goldie walks in on her husband with another woman, it's just the final push she needs to get her act together, take some risks and start anew. With not so much as one word to her grandmother, Goldie takes the car and takes off to California with Shania in tow.

Meanwhile, a very different couple is having a big day of their own. When fashionable, flamboyant and fun-loving Bryan sees a baby while he's out shopping, he returns home to his partner David with an announcement: he wants baby clothes, and a baby to wear them. David's more concerned with Bryan blocking the football game than his outlandish suggestions, reminding Bryan that he can't just return a baby to Barney's. But Bryan's serious about this; David's the most amazing man he's met, and he would make a phenomenal father.

Shania and Goldie arrive in California and enjoy a short-lived vacation, but Goldie says unfortunately she doesn't have the money for them to stay. It's probably time for them to return to reality. But a call from Nana incites a new wave of confidence in Goldie, declaring that they're staying, no matter what it takes. It's time to start anew!

It looks like David caved to Bryan's pleading, as the two meet with a top-notch surrogacy company discussing the process of shopping for eggs and a surrogate. But when the rep asks who the biological father will be, both jump the gun and claim that they'll be the father. After talking about it, Bryan agrees to let David be the bio dad: Bryan's got a handful of manly brothers to carry on his family. Plus, there need to be more people like David out there in the world.

Later, the guys carry out a surrogate interview with none other than Goldie! Goldie's hot for the job; she's great at being pregnant. Having Shania's the most successful thing she's ever done. And she doesn't have any moral issues with doing it for two men; she actually requested a gay couple. This looks like a surrogate match made in heaven!

Soon after, the gang arrives at the family planning center, ready to implant their donor egg and make this baby a reality! David goes into the room with Goldie for the process (he's a "doctor for lady bits") and has a miniature emotional breakdown about his doubts about being a father. But Goldie reassures David that he'll be an amazing dad, and this baby will have two fantastic parents who love it dearly.

Nana tracks down Goldie and Shania, busts in just in the nick of time to stop the insemination process, forbidding Goldie from making what she considers to be a horrible mistake. In her angry passion, Nana makes quite the confession; she caught her husband cheating on her with a man. And she still stayed with that awful man for another 10 years. Despite Nana's story, Goldie stays strong and insists that she's going through with it. She needs to do this, to help this couple and to help herself.

Later, Goldie takes a pregnancy test at David and Bryan's home. And while they're anxiously waiting for the results, they make a sweet gesture, gifting her a professional suit to pursue her dream of becoming a lawyer. David tells Goldie that it doesn't matter what it says: she gave them hope! Goldie looks at the test as we're left to wonder... is Goldie pregnant?!
