SMOOTH OPERATOR FINESSES HIS OWN MURDER DEFENSE - When Mark Landry (guest star Tim Guinee), a charming real estate broker, is accused of murdering his girlfriend, her young daughter, and her employers at a jewelry store, Detectives Briscoe (Jerry Orbach) and Green (Jesse L. Martin) must prove that the seemingly likable man is not who he pretends to be. Though they learn that even his recently murdered girlfriend had discovered that he not only had a secret identity, but also a criminal record of domestic abuse and a previous girlfriend who met with a suspicious end, A.D.A.'s McCoy and Carmichael (Sam Waterston and Angie Harmon) have difficulty prosecuting the case as Landry, representing himself, gets key evidence thrown out of the trial, and seems to win the allegiance, if not affection, of the female jury foreperson (guest star Penny Balfour).
