'Tomb Raider' Director Shortlist May Include Kathryn Bigelow

The reboot's shortlist of directors reportedly includes Bigelow and two other female directors as Warner Bros. looks for a 'Michelle MacLaren type' to serve behind the lens.

AceShowbiz - It's been years since MGM announced that it would team up with GK Films to make an untitled Tomb Raider reboot. In February, the rights to the reboot landed at Warner Bros. and Evan Daugherty was hired to write the screenplay. While the studio is currently looking for a director to helm the film, The Tracking Board reports that "Tomb Raider" director shortlist includes Kathryn Bigelow.

According to the site, producers of the film have narrowed down their list of potential directors to three, Bigelow ("Zero Dark Thirty"), Catherine Hardwicke ("Twilight", "Lords of Dogtown"), and Mimi Leder ("The Leftovers", "Deep Impact"). Bigelow, who won an Oscar for her direction of "The Hurt Locker", seems to be the frontrunner in the list.

Back in July, WB and MGM were rumored to look for a "Michelle MacLaren type" to fill the director's chair. However, MacLaren herself was not in the contention. With her not attached to "Wonder Woman" anymore, MacLaren seems to be busy doing another project.

Tricia Brock, the director of famous TV series "The Walking Dead" and "Girls", was previously reported to direct the reboot, but sources said that she officially passed on the project.

The new "Tomb Raider" film will focus on Lara Croft's early years as an adventurer. The studio has not announced the official release date just yet, but the movie is expected to arrive in 2017.
