Scientology leader David Miscavige was allegedly the one behind the 'Mission: Impossible' actor's divorce from his first wife in 1990.

AceShowbiz - Tom Cruise's marriage to his first wife Mimi Rogers was reportedly sabotaged by Scientology leader David Miscavige. Mimi and her family were Scientologists and she was the one who introduced Tom to the religion.

According to Tony Ortega's The Underground Bunker blog, Mimi thought the church would help Tom handle his playboy lifestyle. "Tom was f**king everything that moved," a close family friend to Mimi told the blog, "But they were all women. I know why the gay rumors started later, but it had nothing to do with who he was having sex with. He slept with women, and he slept with a lot of them."

However, the fact that Mimi's father left the church became an issue later and the church tried to separate her from Tom. "Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief" author Lawrence Wright said, "It would be one thing to have Tom Cruise as a trophy for Scientology, but it would be a disaster if he became a walking advertisement for the squirrels [people who practices Scientology outside of official channels]."

David then allegedly tried to separate Tom and Mimi by encouraging the actor's interest on Nicole Kidman. Former Church of Scientology executive Marty Rathbun explained, "Why would Scientology want to promote Tom's promiscuity? Because Mimi was connected to her father Phil Spickler, and Miscavige wanted to own Tom outright."

Marty said he regretted that he played part on Mimi and Tom's separation. "I wrote to her and apologized for all that. She didn't know the details of what we'd done, but she was generally hip to what was going on," he told the blog.
