AFI's Best Films of 2012 Include 'Les Miserables', 'Django Unchained' and 'Life of Pi'

Also mentioned in the list are 'Zero Dark Thirty', 'Lincoln', 'Dark Knight Rises', 'Argo', 'Beasts of the Southern Wild', 'Moonrise Kingdom' and 'Silver Linings Playbook'.

Leading to Hollywood's busy awards season, the American Film Institute released its annual top ten list of best films of the year. Selected by critics, scholars as well as film and TV artists, the movies that make it to the list include Tom Hooper's musical "Les Miserables", Quentin Tarantino's spaghetti Western "Django Unchained", and Ang Lee's survival drama "Life of Pi".

Also mentioned in the list are Kathryn Bigelow's political thriller "Zero Dark Thirty (2012)", Christopher Nolan's final Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises", Wes Anderson's quirky romance "Moonrise Kingdom", and Ben Affleck's true story drama "Argo". The rest are "Beasts of the Southern Wild", "Lincoln" and "Silver Linings Playbook".

Upon announcing the list, AFI President Bob Gazzale said, "AFI Awards celebrates America's storytellers as collaborators." He went on, "We are honored to bring together artists as a community, without competition, to acknowledge the gifts they have given the world in 2012."

AFI's list was revealed just a few days before Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe announce their nominees on December 12 and 13 respectively. Films which are included in the three's top choices and nominations are usually becoming leading indicators of which titles are likely to compete for the Academy Awards early next year.

Among critically-acclaimed pics this year that were snubbed by AFI included Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" and Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey". Meanwhile, the filmmakers of the top ten movies will be celebrated during a luncheon on January 11 in Los Angeles.

Additionally, AFI unveiled its choice of best TV shows of the year. They included "Mad Men", "Breaking Bad", "The Walking Dead", and "Homeland" among others.
