Michael Douglas to Play Ronald Reagan in Ridley Scott's 'Reykjavik'

The actor, who is famously known as an active Democratic fundraiser, will play the former Republican President in the Cold War-era political drama to be produced by the 'Prometheus' helmer.

Michael Douglas is famously known as a liberal actor, but he's about to play a very conservative iconic figure in his next movie. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the husband of Catherine Zeta-Jones is set to star as the 40th president of the United States, Ronald Reagan, in Ridley Scott-produced political drama "Reykjavik".

The casting news is rather surprising since Douglas is well known as an active Democratic fundraiser. The movie itself is currently courting "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" helmer Mike Newell to take the directing duty. Previously, it was Ridley Scott himself who was mentioned as the possible director.

Written by Kevin Hood, "Reykjavik" takes place in 1986 when actor-turned-Republican President Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev met for a negotiation in the Icelandic capital. They aimed to iron out peace against the backdrop of the Chernobyl nuclear tragedy. The film is currently in search to find its Gorbachev.

Douglas was last seen starring opposite Channing Tatum and Michael Fassbender in "Haywire". His other forthcoming gig is "Last Vegas", a Jon Turteltaub-directed comedy which also stars Robert De Niro and Morgan Freeman.
