The ballad is the second single lifted from "Flavors of Entanglement", an album like any of her previous ones that channels her emotional states. "As soon as I start to write there's this uncensored, unedited freedom to step outside out of the shackles of the thoughts in my head around being ashamed," the Canadian singer said. "If I could offer anything to anyone listening to my songs it would be just a four minute moment of dropping any shame of anyone being human."

Initially worked on the book when she was still dating her then fiance Ryan Reynolds, Alanis was forced to cancel it after they mutually broke their engagement in February 2007. "I put that (book) away for a while," so she told Venice magazine, explaining further "This whole deadline thing didn't quite work and there were lots of changes going on in my life then; not a good time to have a big book deadline."

"We'll be going back and forth from Europe to America probably three times throughout the summer, doing our own shows and probably some festivals as well," Alanis said. Concerning the album, Morissette opened up that the album that is produced by former Frou Frou member, Guy Sigsworth, dug deep into her personal struggles throughout the last few years. About it, she commented, "Really, in the end, the personal struggles are political. Our emotions align themselves with larger symptomatic things in the world. We face a large war out there, but (the album) more closely reflects the war in peoples' living rooms... the icy silence at home, versus the big cold war."
