AceShowbiz - Jay Leno is lauding the recent election as a triumph for democracy, despite his personal reservations against president-elect Donald Trump. Invited on "The Talk," Leno shared his reflections on the current political climate and the importance of fair elections.
the former 'Tonight Show' host addressed Trump's re-election, citing the election as a "great day for democracy." "The nice thing about this election is, it was fair, it was honest. OK, I was not a fan, but that's OK, it's the President of the United States - let's all get together, thank you very much," Leno stated.
Leno expressed concerns about the potential for divisive behavior post-election but emphasized the importance of nationwide unity. "You know, my fear is they're going to be watching this, and there are 1,100 votes out of 300 million between, and it's going to be name calling about, 'OK, here's the answer, OK? This is the thing.' And it was done professionally - there was no cheating. Everybody says it was honest. I mean, it's a great day for democracy," he added.
Co-host Natalie Morales sparked an insightful conversation by asking Leno about his experiences hosting live shows during past elections. Leno reminisced about his time on "The Tonight Show," explaining, "Well, you know, it was different. In my day, you kind of made fun of both sides. You'd get angry letters from both sides. Now you kind of have to take a side and, yeah, it's a little bit different."
Reflecting on the evolving nature of political satire, Leno acknowledged the increased polarization in contemporary media, which he partly attributes to Trump's influence. "People say to me, 'Oh I bet you wish you were doing 'The Tonight Show' when Trump was president.' No, I don't," Leno told TheWrap.
"Because when you really don't like a guy, it's worse … I mean, you see how polarizing it gets now. I sort of blame Trump for all of that. Because at 'The Tonight Show,' we used to make fun of both sides, and people couldn't really figure out your politics."
Despite not being a fan of Trump, Leno remains hopeful. "Let's all get together," he urged. "There was no cheating. Everybody says it was honest. It's a great day for democracy.†The comedian's call for unity amidst a fractured political landscape strikes a chord, reminding viewers of the fundamental importance of integrity in the democratic process.
