AceShowbiz - Jay Leno, aged 74, recently captured attention when he appeared at a Beverly Hills comedy event sporting a black eye, swollen face, and a bandaged wrist. Leno recounted to TMZ the incident that led to his injuries.
"I was staying at a hotel … on a hill," Leno explained. "I said, 'Where's a good place to eat?' 'Oh, the bottom.' The restaurant was there, but to get to it, I didn't have a car, so I had to walk about a mile and a half around."
Determined to take a shortcut, Leno decided to descend the steep hill directly. "I said, 'Well, the hill doesn't look that steep. It's about 60, 70 feet. Let me see if I can go down there,' " he continued. Unfortunately, this decision led to a severe tumble. "I rolled down the hill," Leno said, "Hit my head on a rock. Knocked me in my eye."
Despite the harsh tumble, the comedian didn't let his condition interfere with his professional commitments. He managed to perform his comedy show before heading to the hospital for treatment. Leno summed up his attitude with a light-hearted perspective, "The great thing about this age is you don't learn by your mistakes. You keep doing the same stupid thing."
Leno is no stranger to injuries. In November 2022, he sustained third-degree burns on his face while working on one of his classic cars, after a gasoline fire broke out. "The fuel line was clogged so I was underneath it," he explained on "Today". "And then suddenly, boom, I got a face full of gas and then the pilot light jumped and my face caught on fire."
Another mishap occurred just two months later. Leno broke his collarbone, ribs, and kneecaps after getting knocked off his motorcycle by an unseen wire strung across a parking lot. "So, you know, I didn't see it until it was too late. It just clothesline me and, boom, knocked me off the bike," Leno narrated to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Through all these challenges, Leno maintains a sense of humor and commitment to his work. The Emmy Award-winning comedian, who has been married to Mavis Leno since 1980, also handles personal challenges, such as managing his wife's dementia battle. Despite the hardships, Leno finds joy in caring for Mavis, calling her "the most independent woman" he ever knew.
Jay Leno's story is a great reminder of resilience and dedication. His unwavering commitment to performing, even in the face of physical setbacks, is an inspiring testament to the adage that the show must go on.
