AceShowbiz - John Lennon left Yoko Ono embarrassed at least once during their marriage. According to their close friend Elliot Mintz, the lead vocalist of The Beatles put the Japanese songstress "in the most embarrassing position" for hooking up with another woman when they were still together.
On Tuesday, October 22, Elliot spoke to PEOPLE about John putting Yoko in an unpleasant situation. The 79-year-old shared, "He was placing [his wife] in the most embarrassing position that you could ever place a woman in - having a romp in the hay in another room with thin walls while your wife was attending a small party and could hear everything." He stressed, "Yoko is a very stoic woman, but it would have severe consequences."
In a part of Elliot's book titled "We All Shine On: John, Yoko & Me", he "recounts a story from 1972, when [John and Yoko] were guests at a party." At that time, John "got drunk while watching the presidential election results between Richard Nixon and George McGovern."
According to Elliot, John's drinking got heavier as "it became clear that [Richard] would win by a landslide." The author also reveals that John ended up having "loud, raucous sex" with a woman, who was not Yoko, at the party.
In the book, Elliot recalls that Yoko overheard John's bedroom romps. About her reaction at the time, he writes, "Throughout it all, Yoko sat on the sofa, in stunned, mortified silence, as other guests began awkwardly getting up to leave - until they realized that their coats were in the bedroom where John was having sex."
Elliot further reveals what Yoko told him on the next morning following the embarrassing moment. Of what she said, he stated, "I can forgive him, but I don't know if I can ever forget what happened. I don't know if it will ever be the same."
Elliot additionally reflects, "The reality is, as I would learn over the years in the bad behavior department, John would say to me, 'Ellie,' which is what he called me, 'I'm not always the 'Imagine' guy.' " The author adds, "It's one of the reasons, by the way, we all fell in love with him - because he was real."
John and Yoko tied the knot back in 1969. Prior to that, he was married to Cynthia Lennon from 1962 to 1968. The English singer/songwriter was shot to death by a deranged fan outside his Manhattan apartment building on December 8, 1980.
