Denis Leary to Be Gwen Stacy's Father in 'Spider-Man' Reboot

The 53-year-old comedian is in talks to portray Captain George Stacy who, in the comics, loses his life during a battle between Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus.

AceShowbiz - Another actor is going to join the cast of an untitled Spider-Man reboot. Denis Leary is currently in negotiations to play Police Captain George Stacy, The Hollywood Reporter says. The character was played by James Cromwell in Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man 3".

George Stacy is father to Peter Parker's love interest, Gwen Stacy, who is going to be portrayed by Emma Stone. In the comic books, George perishes in an accident during a battle between Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus. Gwen blames Spider-Man for the tragedy.

Leary will join Andrew Garfield who is cast as the titular character, Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben and Rhys Ifans as an unnamed villain. Zooey Deschanel was recently said to portray Daily Bugle employee Betty Brant, while Sally Field was rumored to play Aunt May.

Marc Webb will tackle the helming duty when the new "Spider-Man" film starts principal photography in December for July 3, 2012 release in the U.S. James Vanderbilt will provide the script.

Beside acting, Denis Leary is also writing and directing. He stars and co-creates TV show "Rescue Me" which started airing in 2004. He recently lent his voice for "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs".
