'American Idol' Top 7 Performance Recap: Movies Night
TV

One harp, one electronic and one gospel arrangements pop up in 'American Idol' Songs from Movies night where Quentin Tarantino serves as mentor.

AceShowbiz - This week's theme of "American Idol" is an interesting one, "Songs From the Movies" and to add cherry on top is Quentin Tarantino. The actor slash producer slash director knows any soundtrack enough that he is made the mentor for the top 7. However, he won't sit on the judge panel like he did in the third season.

Straight away Quentin is introduced at the beginning of the show, replacing Ryan Seacrest to utter the catchphrase "This.. is American Idol". Simon Cowell then explained that last week the show had an over time of 8 minutes, and therefore each contestant tonight will get comments only from two judges.

First up is Allison Iraheta who sings "Armageddon" soundtrack: "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" by Aerosmith. Steven Van Zandt in the audience seat, gave her a standing ovation. Paula Abdul says she shares the "same special sauce as Adam" and Simon says she is the only girls hope in the competition.

Anoop Desai goes slow with "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" soundtrack: "Everything I Do, I Do It for You" by Bryan Adams but Quentin wants him to "rough it up". Randy Jackson thinks Anoop has found his "zone" and he congratulates Anoop. Kara DioGuardi similarly says he has found "his place" and she applauds him for adding soul into the performance.

Adam Lambert goes third, singing "Easy Rider" soundtrack: "Born to be Wild" by Steppenwolf. Paula stands up for him and says, "Take it all in, my dear. The reason, Adam, that you're shaking up this whole competition is that you dare to dance in the path of greatness." Simon meanwhile, brings it back to earth, saying that it was great vocally but was like watching The Rocky Horror Picture Show and adding that half of the viewers won't like it.

Bryan Adams' song pops up once more through Matt Giraud. He's going to sing behind the piano "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?" which is a soundtrack to "Don Juan de Marco". Quentin told him that if he sings it like in rehearsal then he bets it will be his best 3 performance. Randy doesn't like the bridge and thinks that it was over sung. Kara echoes this, saying that he was trying to do something different but it just did not work.

Danny Gokey sans his glasses is next, singing "Endless Love" title track by Lionel Richie with the companion of harp. Paula says she thought Danny had to start with a different key but later changed her mind because it was beautiful. Simon says that he can't fault how Danny sang the song but he is disappointed of the arrangement especially when nothing much is changed from the original.

Kris Allen sings "Falling Slowly" by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, a soundtrack to "Once". Kris asks Quentin whether he should go with the guitar and the mentor says no. Randy thinks it was pitchy all the way from the beginning and Kara comments that it was an obscure song. The show is overrunning again so the judges have to keep it short.

The last to perform is Lil Rounds with "The Rose" title track by Bette Midler. Quentin admits that he is a big fan of Lil. Paula says more about the song, emphasizing that it has beautiful lyrics. Simon meanwhile, says "You are not the artist I believe we met seven or eight weeks ago." Lil then stands up for herself saying that it was a pretty song with her gospel twist and Simon ends it with, "It's a Bette Midler song."

On the result show Wednesday, April 15, there will be performances by Miley Cyrus and Jennifer Hudson.
