McHale grew up in a military family and moved to the United States at a young age, eventually settling in Washington state. He attended the University of Washington, where he earned a bachelor's degree in communications. It was during his time in college that he began honing his comedic skills, participating in various theater productions and performing stand-up comedy. After graduation, he became a member of the Seattle-based sketch comedy group, Almost Live! This experience paved the way for his later success in television.

His breakout role in The Soup allowed McHale to showcase his comedic talents, as he lampooned pop culture and current events in a satirical format. The show's success solidified his status as a prominent figure in comedy, and it opened doors for various projects in both television and film. In 2004, he made a notable appearance in Spider-Man 2, further expanding his acting repertoire.

In addition to Community, McHale starred in the short-lived CBS sitcom The Great Indoors, which aired from 2016 to 2017. His versatility as an actor was further highlighted when he took on the role of Starman in the DC Universe series Stargirl, which ran from 2020 to 2022.

In 2020, McHale hosted a special aftershow for the Netflix documentary series Tiger King, where he interviewed key figures from the series, enhancing his status as a pop culture commentator. Additionally, he voiced the character Johnny Cage in the direct-to-video martial arts film Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge and reprised this role in its sequel, Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms, which was released in 2021. He also provided his voice for X-PO in Lego Dimensions and The Scientist in the popular video game Fortnite.

Currently, McHale stars in the Fox comedy series Animal Control, which premiered in 2023, showcasing his continued relevance in the entertainment industry. He also recurs as the abusive chef David Fields in the critically acclaimed FX on Hulu comedy-drama series The Bear, which is set to air until 2024.
