The CSIs investigate the murder of Reverend Rick Renken, who was killed in a cemetery at the grave of former CSI Warrick Brown. Renken was killed by a single gunshot wound to the back of the head. Evidence on his body indicates that the victim visited the home of Tina Brewster, Warrick's widow, who is less than thrilled to see the CSIs around again. After doing a thorough sweep of her home, they find clues leading to Tina's on-again-off-again boyfriend Cliff Paul, a drug addict with a rap sheet. When they find Paul's corpse at his apartment, the team is forced to pursue blood evidence at the scene to try and track down their mystery killer. A break in the case comes when that blood points towards James Newman, a young man who looked up to Warrick when he was still alive. Through some creative financial and forensic investigation, the CSIs eventually learn that Renken and Paul were threats to Newman, so Newman's absentee father killed them, along with a third man who bullied his son. Newman's father is Aaron Voss, a local drug and gang kingpin who appears to represent everything that Warrick was against. Voss, however, appreciated that Warrick looked out for Newman in his absence and returned the favor by keeping Warrick's widow and young son safe. In the end, Voss is arrested for three murders, but keeps his head held high, vowing that he killed those people for the right reasons.
