Reggae star Sugar Minott has died. He was 54. Minott passed away at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica on Saturday, July 10, his wife Maxine Stowe has confirmed to the Associated Press. She did not disclose the cause of his death.
He sparked concerns for his health after canceling performances in Canada two months ago, citing chest pains. The singer started his career in the late 1960s as a member of reggae trio the African Brothers, before embarking on a solo career in the 1970s.
He also scouted out new talent for his record label, Black Roots, launching the career of artists including Junior Reid and Tenor Saw. Minott's next album, "New Day", is due to be released posthumously later this year.
