'Star Trek: Discovery' Adds Two Cast Members, New Alien Species and Original Gay Character

Doug Jones is expected to play a new alien species while Anthony Rapp will portray the franchise's first original gay character.

AceShowbiz - "Star Trek: Discovery" has announced two new addition to the cast ensemble. Doug Jones ("Hellboy", "Pan's Labyrinth") and Anthony Rapp ("Rent", "Junction") are officially announced to join the upcoming TV series.

Jones is set to play Lt. Saru, "a Starfleet Science Officer and a new alien species to the Star Trek universe." Meanwhile, Rapp has been cast as Starfleet Science Officer Lt. Stamets. He is described as an astromycologist and fungus expert who will also be the franchise's first original gay character.

The two actors are joined by the previously-confirmed Michelle Yeoh. She is expected to play Captain Georgiou, the Starfleet Captain aboard the Starship Shenzhou. More cast members are expected to be announced sometime soon before the new show premieres January 2017 on CBS.
