The director reveals the real reasons why she dropped out of the project, saying that she and Universal 'didn't agree creatively about how to do' the movie.

Last year, Sofia Coppola signed on to direct Universal's live-action adaptation "The Little Mermaid", but she eventually exited the project earlier this year reportedly due to creative differences. In a recent interview with TheWrap, the filmmaker revealed the real reasons why she left the project.
"We didn't agree creatively about how to do it, so I didn't want to continue, as we were getting closer, it just wasn't the right fit for what they needed for that project and the way I work," Coppola said of some differences she had with the studio. "I decided to do something in a smaller scale, the way I like to work."
Reports said that Coppola and Universal had a different choice of a lead. Coppola wanted to cast an unknown actress to play the sea princess while the studio desired a bigger name like Chloe Moretz. Thus, the casting of Moretz was said to be the catalyst for Coppola's exit.
As of now, there is no director attached to the project. Richard Curtis is on board to provide a new draft of the script. Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner will produce, while Liza Chasin and Amelia Granger will executive produce. Official release date has yet to be announced, but the project is slated to arrive in the U.S. in 2107.
