'American Idol' May Switch Label From Sony to Universal

'American Idol' May Switch Label From Sony to Universal
Simon Fuller reportedly has been doing an 'outreach' to other labels after the deal with Sony Music expired.

Finding a new judge to replace Simon Cowell in "American Idol" reportedly is not the only main concern for Simon Fuller. According to New York Post, the mastermind behind the FOX's hit singing competition is doing an "outreach" to record labels about a new deal for the "Idol" artists.

The "preliminary talks" with other labels reportedly started as Sony Music's longstanding agreement to represent the "Idol" winner on its various labels is expiring. A source from the publication said the Sony deal came to an end when the TV show season nine finished its run in May this year.

A spokesperson for both Fuller and Sony offers no comment on the report. But one thing for sure, Sony has joined forces with Simon Cowell, Fuller's onetime colleague and now business rival, to launch a U.S. version of "The X Factor" next year.

Universal Music Group might be a new partner for "American Idol" to represent its artists. The giant recording company is thrown in as a possible candidate due to Fuller's "existing relationship with fellow Brit and new Universal CEO Lucian Grainge."
