NARAS decided to open the door for those who haven't released an album and haven't won a Grammy to fight for Best New Artist trophy.

AceShowbiz - Drama surrounding the exclusion of Lady GaGa from Best New Artist nominees of 2010 Grammy Awards has prompted the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) to change rules for the category. "There will be some changes so that particular situation won't repeat itself," NARAS President Neil Portnow said.
Despite her worldwide success, GaGa was not illegible for Best New Artist this year because she received a nomination for Best Dance Recording in 2009. Now, any artists as long as they haven't released an album and haven't won a Gramophone can be nominated for the coveted nod.
"More and more, the first release of a new artist is as a featured artist on someone else's album, or the new artist may release a single long before the release of his/her/their entire first album," it was explained. "With this change, each artist will have at least one opportunity to enter in this important and highly visible category."
