The formation of Boys Like Girls was initiated by vocalist Martin Johnson in late 2005 under the moniker of Fake ID/The Drive. Martin recruited bassist Bryan Donahue and drummer John Keefe. Then, John brought along lead guitarist Paul DiGiovanni to complete their line-up. They later changed their name to Boys Like Girls.
In a bid to promote their music, this band opened an account on PureVolume site. They uploaded a rough demo of "The Great Escape" and an acoustic rendition of "Thunder". Having a social network seemed to be an effective way to promote their music. Within few months, their songs were heard across United States and they became PureVolume's Top Unsigned Artist.
