He further elaborated on Instagram that "external" circumstances were the main reasons for their split, even though love was never an issue between them.

The couple's relationship, which ended in November 2024, was marked by intense emotional highs and lows. Goodnough admitted on Instagram that writing about the breakup was "absolutely miserable" but felt it was necessary.

He acknowledged in his lengthy post that his own actions had exacerbated a reported one-sided conflict between the exes. "A post of mine here was the cause of it. I regret having posted it. I wish I hadn't. The issue addressed was real. My post made it worse rather than better," he confessed.

Despite the conflicts, Goodnough shared that his love for Bertinelli was unparalleled. "I loved Valerie more than I've ever loved someone in a relationship of choice," he wrote, emphasizing that the dissolution of their relationship was the most painful experience of his life. "It has been so acutely agonizing."
