AceShowbiz - Cher's memoir reveals the tumultuous and whirlwind relationship with the late rocker Gregg Allman, including their sudden marriage and its profound highs and lows. In her bestselling memoir, "Cher: The Memoir, Part One", the iconic singer and actress reflects deeply on her second marriage to Gregg Allman, shedding light on the complexities and tribulations of their whirlwind romance.
With candid honesty, Cher documents her journey from her divorce from Sonny Bono to her impulsive decision to marry Allman, a move that startled even her closest confidants. Days after finalizing her divorce from Sonny Bono in June 1975, Cher found herself dating The Allman Brothers Band singer.
Despite some initial hesitation, her pregnancy prompted them to quickly tie the knot, a decision that shocked her inner circle. "I just kept putting one foot in front of the other," Cher writes, acknowledging that their future was uncertain. "I did what I thought was the right thing to do."
The wedding ceremony was brief and unemotional, a stark contrast to her previous nuptials. Nine days later, Cher filed for divorce but later reconciled with Allman. Together, they welcomed a son, Elijah Blue Allman, in 1976.
However, the marriage faced significant struggles due to Allman's addiction to heroin. Cher had previously discovered a bag of white powder belonging to Allman, and later learned the extent of his substance abuse.
"I told him over the phone, 'I'm just so tired of doing this, Gregory. I'm so tired of going to rehab with you,' " she recalls. "He kept going, kept trying to get clean, kept making an effort despite failing in the past."
Despite his efforts, Allman's addiction persisted, culminating in a paranoid breakdown in which he believed there were men with guns in their backyard. This incident became the "last straw" for Cher, who prioritized the safety of their children.
The couple divorced for good in 1979. Allman passed away in 2017 due to complications from liver cancer.
In her memoir, Cher also recounts her experiences with Gene Simmons, John Lennon and Dolly Parton, providing an intimate glimpse into her extraordinary life and career. "Cher: The Memoir, Part One" is a gripping and honest account of love, loss, and the resilience of the human spirit. Part two is expected to be published in 2025.
