The 31-year-old singer succumbed to "multiple traumas" and "internal and external hemorrhages" following a fall from the third-floor balcony of his hotel room at Hotel Casa Sur in Palermo, Buenos Aires. Payne was in Argentina for a concert by his former bandmate Niall Horan.
On Wednesday evening, October 16 hotel staff called emergency services, citing a guest "under the influence of drugs and alcohol." Unfortunately, by the time emergency services and police arrived at 5:07 p.m., Payne had already fallen, sustaining 25 injuries with the head trauma alone being "sufficient to cause death." According to the autopsy, Payne died on the spot due to the severity of his injuries.
