A recurring actor was injured off set, leading to a suspension of the current production of the series' sophomore season, which is set to premiere sometime in 2018.

Season 2 production of HBO's "Westworld" has been suspended after an actor was injured off set. The network stated in an official statement, "Due to a medical emergency involving a performer in a recurring role on season two of 'Westworld', filming on one of the two units has been temporarily suspended."

"The castmember was not on set when this occurred," the network added. "And out of respect for the performer's privacy, we have no additional details to share, other than that everyone at 'Westworld' sincerely hopes for a quick recovery."

Though the network refused to give further details on the matter, TMZ reported that the cast member, a male, fell at his home and hit his head. He was said to be seriously injured.

The HBO series began the filming for its sophomore season in July. The new season of the popular series is scheduled to air sometime in 2018. There's no word on whether the suspension would push back the premiere date.

Based on Michael Crichton's 1973 movie of the same name, "Westworld" is set at the intersection of the near future and the reimagined past. It explores a world in which every human appetite, no matter how noble or depraved, can be indulged without consequence. Starring Evan Rachel Wood, Thandy Newton, James Marsden and Jeffrey Wright, the series collected 22 Emmy nominations and won four of them.

This was not the first time for the series to have its production shut down midway. During season one, the filming was suspended for two months between December 2015 and February 2016 to let the writers catch up on scripts. To avoid similar issue, showrunner Jonathan Nolan previously revealed that he and co-showrunner Lisa Joy had all 10 episodes written before production began.
