Viewers take to Twitter to express their devastation after the cable channel announces that the critically-acclaimed sci-fi series will not return for season 5.

AceShowbiz - "Westworld" is shut down for good on HBO. The once-hit sci-fi series will not return for season 5 as the cable channel announced its decision on Friday, November 4 to cancel the show after four seasons.

HBO said in a statement, "Over the past four seasons, Lisa and [Jonathan] have taken viewers on a mind-bending odyssey, raising the bar at every step. We are tremendously grateful to them, along with their immensely talented cast, producers and crew, and all of our partners at Kilter Films, Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television. It's been a thrill to join them on this journey."

Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan were the creators of "Westworld". They said in a statement through their banner Kilter Films, "Making Westworld has been one of the highlights of our careers. We are deeply grateful to our extraordinary cast and crew for creating these indelible characters and brilliant worlds. We've been privileged to tell these stories about the future of consciousness - both human and beyond - in the brief window of time before our AI overlords forbid us from doing so."

The show's cancellation arrived after Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav pledged aggressive cost-cutting. Words are the judgment was made based on the show's hefty production costs paired with dwindling viewership. Ratings have slipped each season since and dramatically dropped in season 4.

Still, the show has its cult following who was hoping for another season. Reacting to the shocking decision, one fan exclaimed on Twitter, "Wait, what? NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!" Another expressed their disappointment, "I'M DEVASTATED."

"Wait Nooooooooooo! I just finished season 4! Whyyyyyy?!!" a third fan bawled. Someone else lamented, "Omg. I love Westworld All the good shows leave and they have all this reality crap on," while another added, "That sucks. It's a great show."

While the fourth season finale wasn't entirely a cliffhanger, Jonathan previously said in an interview that he hoped HBO would give the series a fifth season to wrap up the show's ambitious story, which has chronicled a robot uprising that changed the fate of humanity. "We always planned for a fifth and final season," he said last month. "We are still in conversations with the network. We very much hope to make them."

Co-creator Lisa likewise said the series has always been working toward a specific ending. "Jonah and I have always had an ending in mind that we hope to reach. We have not quite reached it yet," she explained.

Good news for the cast is at least they will still be paid for season 5. According to Deadline, the core cast had pay-or-play deals for season 5. The show starred Evan Rachel Wood, Thandiwe Newton (formerly Thandie Newton), Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson, Luke Hemsworth, Aaron Paul, Angela Sarafyan and James Marsden, with Ariana DeBose, Aurora Perrineau and Daniel Wu joining in season 4.
