Patrick George Considine, born on 5 September 1973, is an English actor, director, screenwriter, and musician who has built a formidable reputation for portraying complex antiheroes in independent cinema. Over a career spanning more than two decades, he has earned two British Academy Film Awards, three Evening Standard British Film Awards, and a Silver Lion for Best Short Film at the 2007 Venice Film Festival, establishing himself as one of the most distinctive and respected talents in British film and television.

Considine’s journey into the arts began in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, where he was raised in a working-class family. He developed an early passion for performance and later studied at the University of Brighton, where he met filmmaker Shane Meadows. This collaboration proved pivotal, as Considine made his first major onscreen appearance in Meadows’ A Room for Romeo Brass in 1999, showcasing a raw intensity that would become his hallmark. He quickly followed this with a critically acclaimed performance as Alfie in Pawe? Pawlikowski’s Last Resort in 2000, a role that brought him to wider attention and set the stage for a series of powerful portrayals.

The early 2000s saw Considine amass an impressive filmography, including roles in Doctor Sleep, 24 Hour Party People, In America, and My Summer of Love. However, it was his searing performance in Shane MeadowsDead Man’s Shoes in 2004 that cemented his status as a leading talent, winning him the Empire Award for Best British Actor and a nomination for the British Independent Film Award for Best Actor. His work often explored dark, psychologically complex characters, a theme he continued when he moved behind the camera. Considine wrote and directed the short film Dog Altogether in 2007, which won a BAFTA Award for Best Short Film and a Silver Lion at Venice, and he adapted it into the acclaimed 2011 feature Tyrannosaur, which earned him a BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer.

On stage, Considine demonstrated his versatility by earning nominations for both an Olivier Award and a Tony Award for Best Actor in 2018 and 2019 for his powerful performances in Jez Butterworth’s The Ferryman, first at the Royal Court Theatre and Gielgud Theatre in London, then on Broadway at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. His television work has been equally distinguished, with lead roles in productions such as Pu-239, My Zinc Bed, Red Riding, Informer, and the The Suspicions of Mr Whicher series. He also appeared in acclaimed series like Peaky Blinders in 2016, The Outsider in 2020, and The Third Day in 2020. Most notably, Considine achieved global recognition for his lead role as King Viserys I Targaryen in the HBO phenomenon House of the Dragon from 2022 to 2024, delivering a deeply human and tragic performance that became a cornerstone of the series. Today, Considine continues to work across film, television, and theater, with his directorial feature Journeyman further showcasing his talents, and he remains a highly respected figure known for his commitment to challenging, emotionally resonant storytelling.
