Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu becomes a frontrunner for Oscar's Best Director after he takes home the DGA trophy in feature film category.

AceShowbiz - Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu takes home Directors Guild Award in feature film category ahead of the Academy Awards, thanks to his brilliant work in the superhero satire "Birdman". He beats Clint Eastwood ("American Sniper"), Richard Linklater ("Boyhood"), Morten Tyldum ("The Imitation Game"), and Wes Anderson ("The Grand Budapest Hotel").

"If this is considered a great film, it has nothing to do with me, it is a miracle," the triumphant helmer said in his acceptance speech in front of the crowd gathering at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza hotel in Century City Saturday, February 7. "I actually say that humbled," he added, "because I never expected to be here tonight talking to you, never in my life."

In the 11-year history of DGAs, all the winners in feature film category went on to collect the Oscar for best director, except for Ben Affleck in 2013. He did not even get nominated for best director at the Academy Awards although his movie "Argo" ended up grabbing the most coveted best picture. If Inarritu wins the Oscar this year, he will follow fellow Mexican Alfonso Cuaron who took the title last year for his flick "Gravity".

Female directors were also triumphant at this year's DGAs. Laura Poitras won the prize in documentary category for "Citizenfour" about National Security Agency whistle-blower Edward Snowden, Lesli Linka Glatter took home the best director in TV drama for spy series "Homeland", and Lisa Cholodenko is triumphant in TV movie/miniseries category for HBO's "Olive Kitteridge".

The event was hosted by "Glee" star Jane Lynch. The presenters included Pierce Brosnan, Bradley Cooper, Jodie Foster, Bill Murray, Steven Spielberg, and Barbra Streisand.
