Michael Phelps was suspended from swimming competition and funding for six months following his Baltimore DUI arrest, USA Swimming announced on Monday, October 6. Michael will also be withdrawn from 2015 FINA World Championships team and will not represent the U.S. in Russia next August.
Chuck Wielgus, the executive director of USA Swimming, said in a statement, "Membership in USA Swimming, and particularly at the National Team level, includes a clear obligation to adhere to our Code of Conduct. Should an infraction occur, it is our responsibility to take appropriate action based on the individual case. Michael's conduct was serious and required significant consequences."
Chuck added, "Michael has publicly acknowledged the impact of his decisions, his accountability especially due to his stature in the sport and the steps necessary for self-improvement. We endorse and are here to fully support his personal development actions."
U.S. Olympic Committee CEO Scott Blackmun said of the sanctions, "We think the sanctions are appropriate and we are glad that Michael is seeking help. We are grateful that nobody was hurt and appreciate the speed at which USA Swimming and Michael took action."
Michael's representative at Octagon said, "Michael accepts USA Swimming's sanctions. He has apologized for his actions and, as he shared yesterday, is taking steps to address them."
Michael was arrested on September 30 after driving at 84 mph in a 45-mph zone in Baltimore. According to Maryland Transportation Authority, he was then charged with driving under the influence, excessive speed and crossing double lane lines in the Fort McHenry Tunnel on Interstate 95. According to ESPN, Michael's trial is scheduled for November 19.
The eighteen-time Olympic gold medalist tweeted on Sunday that he's "going to take some time away to attend a program that will provide the help I need to better understand myself."
