It's official, Lady GaGa is going to kick off upcoming live telecast of 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. The announcement was made by her Little Monsters live from Times Square on Thursday night, August 18. Together, the crowd unfolded a banner that read, "GAGA TO OPEN VMAs!!!" Promo ads for her upcoming performance have been revealed a day prior.

"I have a really big announcement," she teased before adding, "But I thought as usual, instead of me announcing it, I'd let the Little Monsters do it for me." Sharing her excitement about getting the opening slot, she gushed, "It means the world to me. I just feel really blessed every day. I have the most amazing fans."

Lady GaGa is nominated for four nods at the VMAs this year. The Mother Monster is vying for Best Female Video ("Born This Way") as well as Best Art Direction and Best Choreography, both for "Judas". She is also competing for new category Best Video With a Message, thanks to "Born This Way".

The clip which sends self-love message is up against Eminem's "Love the Way You Are", Taylor Swift's "Mean", Pink's "F***kin' Perfect", Katy Perry's "Firework" and Rise Against's "Make It Stop (September's Children)".

The winners are going to be announced at a star-studded ceremony at Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on August 28. Joining GaGa on the performer list are Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Adele, and Bruno Mars. The presenters, meanwhile, are Jonah Hill, Rick Ross, Selena Gomez, Seth Rogen, Kim Kardashian and Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All.

Two tributes have been prepared by MTV this year. One is going to salute Britney Spears and will likely get a dose of Michael Jackson, Madonna and Janet Jackson as the Southern Belle's music inspirations. The other is to remember MTV's "very near and dear" friend Amy Winehouse.
