The troubled pop star and the R 'n' B crooner are among the artists that have been nominated for the music channel's annual event.

AceShowbiz - The 2008 MTV Video Music Awards won't be airing until September 7, but the event's organizers have already announced the early nominees on Friday July, 25 on FNMTV. Although the nominees announcement is still for two categories only (Best Male and Best Female Videos), some famous names on the music scenes, such as Britney Spears, Rihanna, Chris Brown and Mariah Carey are already among the list to compete for the awards.
Britney, Mariah and Rihanna will battle each other along with two other candidates Katy Perry and Jordin Sparks for a chance to take home the Best Female Video. Meanwhile, Chris who is eying the opportunity to grab the Best Male Video, will also face a tough competition against the likes of Usher, Flo Rida, Lil Wayne and T.I.
All the nominees that are being announced were derived from the voting done by music fans who can select which artists they want to nominate to win the selected categories at the event. The next categories that will be announced shortly are Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Pop Video. Fans will have until July 30 to vote for their favorite Hip-Hop and Pop Videos, before MTV announced the final nominees on August 1 .
Beside the early nominees, other details that have been announced by the VMA's organizers are the headlining performers and also the host. Pop-rock band Jonas Brothers were the one being tapped by MTV to headline the event, while British comedy actor, Russell Brand has been selected as the host of the show.
