Years & Years emerged as one of the defining British electropop acts of the 2010s, a trio whose synth-driven anthems and emotionally resonant lyrics captured a massive audience and topped charts internationally. Formed in London in 2010, the band originally consisted of lead vocalist and keyboardist Olly Alexander, bassist Mikey Goldsworthy, and keyboardist Emre Turkmen. Their journey from underground beginnings to mainstream success was a steady climb, marked by a series of increasingly popular EPs that built a dedicated fanbase and critical anticipation for their debut album.
The band's breakthrough arrived in spectacular fashion in 2015 with the single "King." The track's pulsating rhythm and Alexander's distinctive vocals propelled it to number one on the UK Singles Chart, a position it also achieved in numerous other countries. This triumph set the stage for their debut studio album, "Communion," which debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and was recognized as the fastest-selling debut album of the year from a UK signed band. The album further solidified their hit-making status with the single "Shine," which peaked at number two in the UK. This period of intense success earned them the BBC's Sound of 2015 award and multiple Brit Award nominations.
Their sophomore album, "Palo Santo," arrived in July 2018, presenting a more conceptual and visually striking era. The record explored themes of desire and devotion within a dystopian narrative, spawning the ambitious singles "Sanctify" and the chart-topping "If You're Over Me." The album became their second consecutive top ten entry in the UK. Beyond music, frontman Olly Alexander became a prominent voice for LGBTQ+ advocacy, with the band's work earning them accolades including a British LGBT Award and an Attitude Award.
A significant transition was announced in March 2021, revealing that Years & Years would continue as Alexander's solo project, with Goldsworthy and Turkmen departing. The third album, "Night Call," released under the Years & Years name in January 2022, debuted at number one in the UK, proving the enduring power of the brand. However, by 2023, Alexander ceased using the band name altogether, performing under his own name, and confirmed the project's disbandment in 2024. Throughout their active years, Years & Years were nominated for six Brit Awards and received a Brits Billion Award, leaving behind a catalog of era-defining pop music.
