SuperM emerged as a groundbreaking South Korean supergroup, famously dubbed the "Avengers of K-Pop," following its strategic formation in 2019 by SM Entertainment in partnership with Capitol Music Group. The ambitious project brought together seven established stars from the label's existing boy band roster: the iconic Taemin from the veteran group SHINee; the powerhouse vocalist Baekhyun and main dancer Kai from the global phenomenon EXO; the dynamic rap and performance duo Taeyong and Mark from NCT 127; the versatile Ten from the Chinese subunit WayV; and Lucas, also a member of NCT and WayV. The group's explicit mission was to create a "super" act capable of making a significant impact on the global music market, particularly in the United States.
The group made a monumental debut on October 4, 2019, with their self-titled EP "SuperM" and its lead single "Jopping." The release was an instant commercial success, entering the prestigious US Billboard 200 chart at number one. This historic achievement made SuperM the first Asian artist ever to top the chart with a debut release, solidifying their status as a global force from day one. "Jopping" itself was critically acclaimed, earning a spot on Billboard's list of the "25 Best K-pop Songs" of 2019. Capitalizing on this momentum, the group embarked on a North American tour and later released their first studio album, "Super One," in September 2020, which further demonstrated their cohesive blend of powerful performances and high-energy music.
SuperM's active promotional period was intense but relatively brief. Following a series of releases and performances, the group entered an indefinite hiatus in mid-2021. This pause was necessitated by the mandatory military enlistments of several older members, beginning with Baekhyun. Furthermore, Lucas departed from SM Entertainment in 2023, following a prior hiatus from the group's activities. There have been no subsequent announcements regarding the group's future activities or a potential reunion. Despite their short-lived time as an active unit, SuperM's legacy is defined by their record-breaking debut and their role as a high-profile experiment in assembling a supergroup from the pinnacle of K-pop talent to target the international stage.
