Mickey Guyton
- Attended Santa Monica College
Mickey Guyton emerged as a groundbreaking voice in American country music, known for her powerful vocals and for courageously addressing themes of race and identity within the genre. Born Candace Mycale Guyton on June 17, 1983, in Arlington, Texas, she was raised with a diverse musical diet that included country, pop, and R&B, influences that would later define her own sound. Her journey to stardom began in earnest after a pivotal move to Nashville, Tennessee, in 2011, where she soon signed a recording contract with Capitol Records Nashville.
The label released her debut EP, Unbreakable, in 2015, followed by her breakthrough single "Better Than You Left Me." The track climbed to number 34 on the US Country Airplay chart and earned Guyton a New Female Vocalist of the Year nomination at the Academy of Country Music Awards, marking her arrival on the country scene. Despite this early success, Guyton faced significant challenges as a Black woman in a predominantly white industry, navigating years where her career progression did not match her talent.
A defining moment in her career came in 2020 with the release of "Black Like Me," a poignant anthem inspired by her personal experiences and released amid the national reckoning following the death of George Floyd. The song resonated widely, earning Guyton her first Grammy nomination for Best Country Solo Performance and making her the first Black woman ever nominated in that category. This period of heightened recognition continued with the release of her third EP, Bridges, and a historic collaboration with Dean Brody on the song "Boys," which made Guyton the first Black woman to score a number one hit on the Canada Country chart.
In September 2021, she delivered her highly anticipated debut studio album, Remember Her Name, a critically acclaimed project that further solidified her place as an essential and transformative artist. The album's title track served as a powerful statement of resilience. Guyton's trailblazing path has been recognized with numerous honors, including hosting the Academy of Country Music Awards alongside Dolly Parton and Gabby Barrett, and performing at major events like the Grammy Awards and the Super Bowl LVIII pre-game show. Personally, she married Grant Savoy in 2017, and they welcomed their first son in 2021. Mickey Guyton continues to perform, write, and advocate for greater diversity and inclusion in country music, using her platform to inspire and pave the way for future artists.
