John Mulaney is an American stand-up comedian, writer, actor, and producer renowned for his sharp, observational wit and a polished stage persona that belies the often chaotic and deeply personal stories he tells. His career, which spans acclaimed stand-up specials, celebrated television writing, and memorable voice acting roles, has established him as one of the most distinctive comedic voices of his generation. He first rose to prominence as a writer for Saturday Night Live, where his contributions left a lasting mark on the show's legacy.
Born John Edmund Mulaney on August 26, 1982, in Chicago, Illinois, he was raised in a Catholic family with a father, Charles "Chip" Mulaney, Jr., who was an attorney and a mother, Ellen, who was a professor of law. His early interest in comedy and performance led him to Georgetown University, where he graduated in 2004. After moving to New York City, Mulaney began performing stand-up comedy, quickly developing a clean-cut, almost old-fashioned delivery that contrasted humorously with his clever and self-deprecating material. His early work culminated in his first comedy album, The Top Part, in 2009.
Mulaney's big break came when he was hired as a writer for Saturday Night Live in 2008, a position he held until 2013. During his tenure, he became a key creative force, co-creating the wildly popular recurring character Stefon, played by Bill Hader, and contributing to countless other sketches. His success on the show provided a platform for his stand-up career, leading to his first major Netflix special, New in Town, in 2012. He later created and starred in the short-lived Fox sitcom Mulaney in 2014, the same year he married makeup artist Annamarie Tendler.
Following his departure from the SNL writers' room, Mulaney's stand-up career flourished with critically acclaimed specials like The Comeback Kid (2015) and Kid Gorgeous (2018), the latter earning him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special. He also expanded into other creative ventures, performing on Broadway with Nick Kroll in Oh, Hello and serving as a writer and producer on the parody series Documentary Now!. His voice acting career took off with roles as Andrew Glouberman in the Netflix animated series Big Mouth and as Spider-Ham in the Oscar-winning film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
The years following 2020 were marked by significant personal and professional evolution for Mulaney. He entered rehab for cocaine and alcohol addiction, an experience he would later address with raw honesty in his 2023 stand-up special Baby J, which won him another Emmy. His marriage to Tendler ended in 2021, and he later began a relationship with actor Olivia Munn, with whom he had a son. Professionally, he continued to diversify, hosting Saturday Night Live multiple times, releasing the inventive children's special John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch, and taking on dramatic guest roles in series like The Bear and Dickinson. He further showcased his versatility by hosting the Netflix talk experiment Everybody's in LA in 2024. With a career defined by intelligent writing, resonant storytelling, and a unique comedic voice, John Mulaney remains a pivotal figure in contemporary comedy.
