AceShowbiz - Even seasoned entertainers are not immune to scams, as John Mulaney showed in the latest episode of his Netflix show "Everybody's Live".
The comedian opened the show with a humorous yet alarming recount of his attempt to have the iconic hip-hop group Bone Thugs-N-Harmony perform their 1996 hit "Tha Crossroads."
Mulaney and his team initially found a contact online and scheduled a Zoom call with someone presenting themselves as the group's manager. However, none of the actual band members appeared on the call. Red flags began to pile up quickly from there.
Mulaney described in detail how the supposed manager strung him along, including convincing him to withdraw $2,800 from his personal bank account, an amount he had to work around pre-set measures meant to protect his sobriety.
"The cash had to come from me, like I couldn't pay it through the show budget," Mulaney explained, adding that he had to call his wife, Olivia Munn, in New York for approval to access the funds.
Things took an even more peculiar turn when the scammer audaciously demanded $100,000 at the last minute, making his intentions clear.
Mulaney, who had already been skeptical, mused, "I'm concerned now that I never had any direct contact with Bone Thugs-N-Harmony." To rectify the situation, he put his show's contact number on the screen, inviting any of the real Bone Thugs-N-Harmony members to call in to set the record straight.
Despite the setback, Mulaney maintained his humor, directly addressing the scammer, "I do indeed look like someone you could hustle over a booking for Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. But you played this very wrong."
He joked that the scammer could have easily made a large sum by appearing at the taping with any four men claiming to be the group. Instead, Mulaney was left with $2,800 in cash he had to return to his wife and immediately alert his sponsor about.
"Everybody's Live" can be watched on Netflix on Wednesday nights, featuring appearances from Wanda Sykes, John Waters, Randall Park, and Aidy Bryant.
