Cold War Kids emerged from the Southern California indie rock scene in the mid-2000s, distinguished by their blues-infused piano rock, raw lyrical narratives, and the passionate vocal delivery of frontman Nathan Willett. Formed in 2004 in Fullerton, California, the band built a fervent grassroots following through relentless touring and a series of well-received EPs, establishing a signature sound that blended literary storytelling with urgent, gospel-tinged instrumentation.
The original lineup featured Willett on vocals and piano, Matt Maust on bass, Jonnie Russell on guitar, and Matt Aveiro on drums. Their early work on the independent label Monarchy Music captured the attention of the blogosphere, leading to a major label deal with Downtown/V2 Records. Their debut full-length album, Robbers & Cowards, arrived in 2006 and became a cult classic, propelled by the enduring anthem "Hang Me Up to Dry." The record's success was built on the strength of their kinetic live performances and a series of vivid, character-driven songs that felt both intimate and anthemic.
Building on their initial momentum, the band released Loyalty to Loyalty in 2008, which contained the alternative radio hit "Something Is Not Right With Me." This period solidified their place in the modern rock landscape. The subsequent years saw both evolution and change within the group. Their third album, 2011's Mine Is Yours, marked a shift toward a more polished, arena-ready production style. Following its release, guitarist Dann Gallucci, who had joined prior to the album, departed and was later replaced by David Quon. Drummer Matt Aveiro also left, with Joe Plummer, known for his work with Modest Mouse and The Shins, taking over percussion duties.
The band continued to refine their approach across several more albums, including Dear Miss Lonelyhearts (2013) and Hold My Home (2014), the latter of which spawned their biggest commercial hit to date, "First." This track topped the Billboard Alternative Songs chart and achieved platinum certification, introducing their music to a new, wider audience. Keyboardist and multi-instrumentalist Matthew Schwartz became a permanent member during this era, further expanding their sonic palette. In 2019, Cold War Kids embarked on a new creative chapter with the release of New Age Norms 1, the first installment of a planned trilogy, showcasing a leaner, more soul-influenced direction. The band, comprising Willett, Maust, Quon, Schwartz, and Plummer, remains a consistent and compelling live act, maintaining their connection to fans through a dedicated touring schedule and a catalog that chronicles nearly two decades of artistic growth.
