Sony Pictures Animation has set a release date for upcoming "Emoji" movie. The big-screen adaptation of the animated lovable winky face is scheduled to hit U.S. theaters on August 11, 2017. It's the studio's first title to land on the date.

Back in July, Sony Pictures Animation won rights to the project, which was based on a pitch by Eric Siegel ("Men at Work") and Anthony Leondis ("Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Masters"). Eric and Anthony are co-writing the script with Anthony directing.

Michelle Raimo Kouyate, who stepped down in July after five years as production president of Sony Pictures Animation, is producing. The logline is still under wraps.

Other Sony Pictures Animation projects include an animated "Spider-Man" movie from Phil Lord and Chris Miller ("21 Jump Street", "The Lego Movie"), which will be released in the U.S. on December 21, 2018, and a new adaptation of "Peter Rabbit", which is set for a March 23, 2018 release.
