BBC has granted a greenlight to the small-screen adaptation of the novel, which revolves around an election in Pagford following the sudden death of a Parish Councillor.

J.K. Rowling's first adult novel "The Casual Vacancy" is going to be adapted into the small screen. BBC announces that it has greenlit a TV show based on the book which will air on BBC One as early as 2014. There is no word on number of episodes for the series.

"It is thrilling to be bringing the work of J.K. Rowling to BBC One audiences," says Danny Cohen, BBC One controller. "J.K. Rowling's story-telling is of course peerless in its popularity, and I am looking forward to collaborating with her. This project highlights the ambition and scale of BBC One Drama, as well as the ability of modern television to attract the world's biggest talent and most exciting creative ideas."

Rowling states, "I'm thrilled that the BBC has commissioned 'The Casual Vacancy'." She continues gushing, "I always felt that, if it were to be adapted, this novel was best suited to television and I think the BBC is the perfect home."

Published in September this year, "The Casual Vacancy" is Rowling's first publication apart of the "Harry Potter" series. It received mixed reviews, but was commercially successful. The story revolves around the people in a fictional town of Pagford located in West Country.

After the death of Parish Councillor Barry Fairbrother, a war breaks out before the election for his successor takes place. Those running for a place soon find their darkest secrets revealed on the Parish Council online forum, ruining their campaign and leaving the election in turmoil.

Other details about the show remain scarce, including whether it will air on the U.S. or not.
