'Star Wars' Possibly Prepping for New Trilogy in 3-D

Steven Spielberg and Francis Ford Coppola reportedly could be in consideration to direct the new films, while director George Lucas allegedly will only serve as a producer.

There could be a new "Star Wars" trilogy heading to the big screen in stereoscopic 3-D if Market Saw is to be trusted. Claiming to have heard the story from "a trusted source", the site reported that George Lucas will pass on the directing torch for these new projects although he will still serve as the films' producer.

On who might possibly take over Lucas' directing job, Market Saw pointed out that two heavyweight directors, Steven Spielberg and Francis Ford Coppola, are mentioned to be in consideration. While there is no further detail shared on the possible projects, it is noted that the development of this new trilogy is heavily dependent on the success of James Cameron's "Avatar", which will open wide in theaters across the U.S. on December 18.

The last "Star Wars" saga movie to open in theaters was "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith". Released in summer of 2005, the film that completes the entire "Star Wars" story witnesses the birth of Darth Vader. Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman are among the cast. Since its release, the movie has collected as much as $380.3 million from its domestic sales and $848.8 million worldwide.
